Response: Growing Up Native, Carol Geddes. This short story is based on growing up and living as a Native in Canada, up north.
Carol Geddes, writes this story from her own personal perspective. It’s main focus is on how she saw things, perceived things, and how they actually happened. In other words, its very descriptive and to the point. Geddes, is the narrator of the story and she really brings you into the mood of the story by making it seem like you are right there, watching with your own eyes in most cases.
This story is focused to readers of general interest, but, to be specific, its directed to young Canadians and and young Natives growing up in Canada. Geddes, brings up the point that even to this day, young natives still face many obstacles in most aspects of life. Throughout the story, the realism of some of the hardships she saw and witnessed were brought to life through a very descriptive aspect and those messages and stories are real things that still happen in communities across Canada today. In most cases, this story will appeal to the people that it relates to and its purpose is so evident from the start that readers will keep reading and be captivated by the constant realism’s that are brought up from the story that Geddes tells. The main goal behind this write up is to tell a vivid story. The story is told from a personal point of view and perspective which is very effective through this method. The story is used as a means of informing people of the on goings in native societies and how a lot of these happenings haven’t really changed.
This informative method also solidifies the fact that things do need to change and one writers alone, cannot do it themselves. This story, however, is a good place to start.
One of the key details I found interesting was “The details about where we were are vague.” I thought it was a very “smart” phrase because the memory was vague but all the feelings and senses are so detailed and enthralled in the Geddes words and memory. You are always made to feel like you are there. Another important detail I found, which was a secondary, yet key part of the story was “The sense of family.” Geddes, mentioned on several occasions, how family was used as a way of survival in tough times and how even your extended family and community would also help you through it as well. This write up was very effective for the audience it was targeted to. The way the author used her personal perspective help put it, really, into perspective. You got the most out of every page you read.
Geddes told the story from a well chosen point of view, which is probably the best way to go in this specific scenario.
